REGIONAL PECULIARITIES OF THE LOSSES OF POTENTIAL LIFE YEARS AS A RESULT OF PREMATURE MORTALITY DUE TO THE LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH IN UKRAINE
Section: DEMOGRAPHIC PROCESSES
Language: Ukrainian
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to make an assessment of the Years of Potential Life Lost (YPLL) due to premature
(under 65 years) mortality in Ukraine (in general and due to the main causes) in the regional context. Based
on the State Statistics Service of Ukraine data on the distribution of deaths by gender, age and causes of death the author employs the method of potential demography to calculate the absolute number of Years of Potential
Life Lost due to the premature death of main cause, and rates per 100 thousand. Calculations are made by
region, by gender and place of residence (for urban and rural population). In Ukraine, all deaths before reaching the age of 65 have led to the loss of years of potential life in 2013 at the level of 7917.05 person-years per
100 thousand of the population concerned. Differences from the all-Ukrainian rate by regions in 2013 reached
about ± 30%. The ranking for the size of the age-standardized rate of the YPLL was similar to that of the crude
rate. The lowest rates were observed in the Ternopol, Chernivtsi and Ivano-Frankivsk regions, and the highest
in Kirovograd, Zhytomyr and Donetsk regions. The ratio of the maximum of the Years of Potential Life Lost
(in the Donetsk region) and the minimum rate (in the Ternopol region) due to the all causes, almost doubled.
The regional peculiarities of losses of years of potential life due to premature mortality from each of the six
main classes of diseases and causes of death are determined. A significant disproportion of the loss breakdown
revealed depending on gender: the total number of male YPLL is 2.5 times higher than that of women. The most
pronounced was the prevalence of the scale of losses due to external causes (on average, almost five times). In
most western regions, the difference in male and female indicators is almost equal to or exceeded six times. The
author proves the importance of premature mortality as a threat to public health and well-being, as well as an
obstacle for the Sustainable Development Goals.
Key words: Years of Potential Life Lost (YPLL) under 65 years, premature mortality, person-years, regional
features, leading causes of death.
