ESTIMATION OF THE POTENTIAL OF UKRAINIAN CITIZENS’ TRIPS ABROAD (BASED ON THE STATISTICS OF VALID PASSPORTS FOR TRAVELLING ABROAD)
Section: DEMOGRAPHIC PROCESSES
Language: Ukrainian
Abstract: The article is devoted to the urgent issue of the number of Ukrainian passports for traveling abroad, the prevalence of these documents among the population, as well as the features of sex and age structure of holders of foreign passports, grouping of our country’s regions depending on the distribution of these documents among the population. The work is based on two types of data: 1) information annually provided on a regular basis by the State Statistics Service (the number of population at the beginning of 2016 and the number of arrivals and departures in international migration flows in 2016) and by the State Migration Service (the annual number of passports issued in 2014 – 1st quarter of 2017) and 2) information received from the State Migration Service of Ukraine on the number of valid passports of citizen of Ukraine for travel abroad (as of 17.10.2016) and their distribution by sex, age groups and regions of Ukraine. The last mentioned data is not included in the list of mandatory statistical annual reporting and is provided to the scientific community to study the current situation in this area for the first time.
According to calculations made while working on the article, most (about three quarters) of Ukraine’s population does not have passports for travel abroad. Among the citizens who received this document, the vast majority live in the capital and the western regions of Ukraine. In order to identify the characteristics of the sexage composition of the passport owners, the corresponding characteristics of this group of persons were compared with the situation typical for the whole population. The age structure of passport owners differs from the same indicator for the whole population due to a smaller proportion of older people (over 65) and a higher proportion of persons aged 20–44. The gender composition of the analyzed groups is almost the same, with a female share of 53.0 % for passports holders and 53.7 % for the whole population.
Key words: passport, passport of a citizen of Ukraine for traveling abroad, migration, labor migration, State Migration Service of Ukraine.
