FERTILITY AND MOTHERHOOD IN UKRAINE: REGIONAL ASPECT
Section: DEMOGRAPHIC PROBLEMS
Language: Ukrainian
Abstract: After ten years of fertility increase in Ukraine the fertility dynamics is ambiguous in recent years. In this connection
the study of modern regional characteristics childbearing and its determinants actualizes. Scientific and
practical interest includes the construction of integrative indicators of the conditions of maternity to assess basis
of formation of the regional level and dynamic of childbearing, to determine completeness of implement fertility
preferences and identify problematic regions, in which situation needs priority attention. For this purpose it
was proposed the regional maternity index. In constructing of our maternity index we used 17 indicators (both
stimulants and disincentives) which are combined into 4 blocks. Based on the national specifics we focused on
economic factors that determine the position of women and mothers, but set of indicators that reflect the sociodemographic
environment in the regions, the health of women and the special situation of children were taken
into account also.
According to the analysis of regional maternity indexes we identified three typological groups of regions in
Ukraine in terms of motherhood conditions: the western regions with the highest indices of motherhood due to
better maternal health and a more favorable social and demographic environment; the «belt» of central regions
of Ukraine and southern regions of the country with the average maternity index; and the «belt» of south-eastern
regions and some northern regions with the lowest index mainly because of the negative impact of social,
demographic and some economic factors. Comparative analysis of conditions for maternity in regions of Ukraine
based on maternity indexes 2008 and 2013 showed that the identified features of their regional differentiation
are fairly constant over time.
Key words: motherhood, maternity index, socio-demographic environment factors in fertility.
