Social capital and human health of Ukraine

Abstract: We analyze the relationship between social capital and health in Ukraine. In this article, social capital is defined as the stock of networks, trust and norms of reciprocity. Using the 2009 European Social Survey, first we compare the indicators of social capital as well as self-rated health in Ukraine, Russia and Sweden. Then, we estimate a multiple logistic model for social capital and self-rated health in Ukraine. Only 39.2% of males and 25% of females in Ukraine assessed their health as good and very good. This health measure correlates with social capital indicators, suck as trust in other people, informal networks and norms of reciprocity. Regression-based estimates of impact show that social capital increases self-rated health, particularly for men. Thus, social capital is an important determinant of individual health.
